CLIENT SPOTLIGHT
Ben Patrick Johnson
tom and ben
Ben (left) strikes a pose with trainer Tom Nelson

If you're ever at the gym in the early afternoons during the weekdays, you can't help but hear Ben's mellifluous grunts as he heaves an astonishing amount of heavy metal.

Ben is one of Hollywood's top promo and trainer announcers.   In addition to #1 movies, he is the voice of three top-10 CBS series: COLD CASE, CSI: NEW YORK, CRIMINAL MINDS and NUMB3RS. For Fox, Ben pitches HOUSE, BONES and NASCAR. On cable, Ben is a staple on CourtTV and Starz!  Supported by his home studio, BPJ works directly for a number of radio and TV stations across the country, including: KABC Los Angeles, ESPN Radio Los Angeles , and KSTP Minneapolis.

This gifted talent, has also been gifted with an incredible discipline to body build. Under the tutelage of Muscle Mechanic Tom Nelson, Ben trains 5 times per week. Because of his body recovery capacity, Tom trains him more like a power lifter. A 3.5 year client, Ben started out as "average" in Tom's words and now sees him as "definitely transformed into what Tom considers one of the best looking male physiques in town." Wow-quite an evolution considering we live in the town of Beautiful People. In addition to hitting Ben basically as hard as he can with heavy metal at the gym, Tom also counsels him on nutrition-an area Tom feels that Ben hews very closely to. He's confident that his cheating is minimal.  Training Ben has been one of Tom's most amazing experiences because of his focus and attention to detail. It makes Tom's job fun and gratifying. On a personal level, Tom views his as one of the most remarkable individuals in terms of his unselfish giving of his time and money. This has impacted Tom profoundly so that he himself started a charity. They now contribute to each other's altruistic efforts and are easily the most hardworking pair both in and outside of the gym.

TRAINER Tid Bits

brantley black

One of our trainers, Brantley Black, can bee seen in the upcoming cult horror film TVFace.  Brant plays the role of Hooded Man, an abstract, non-human character who tortures the female lead in a dream-state realm.

The film can be seen in its entirety at www.tvface.tv beginning in July.  TVFace is only the second movie in existence to be released on an international scale via the internet.  See you on the red carpet, Brant!!!

marco and phoenix

Hunky trainer, Marco Reed, is daddy times two!  Marco and Angel's new baby boy is finally here and they are so excited!!!! Phoenix Morris Reed was born on April 16, 2007 11:55am he weighed 8lbs and was 20 inches long. Angel says, "It was quite a journey but definitely much easier the second time around. He truly is the most amazing baby! He is soooo sweet and content and almost never cries. Every day I think he looks more and more like (older baby brother) Gannon."

Greetings!

I'm sure you've heard about The Secret by now.  This current rage actually traces back to one of my favorite motivators, Norman Vincent Peale, author of The Power of Positive Thinking.  Not so earth-shattering, he espouses the simple yet powerful nugget of positivity.

Here's our motivational quote to start things off in the right direction:

"If you expect the best, you will be the best. Learn to use one of the most powerful laws in this world; change your mental habits to belief instead of disbelief. Learn to expect, not to doubt. In so doing, you bring everything into the realm of possibility."

Dr. Norman Vincent Peale

Cynthia Davila - Body Beautiful
cynthia competition

Our inspiration in this newsletter comes from Cynthia Davila, veteran TRAIN Trainer Derek Czarnecki's new bride of 18 months.

Cynthia is a retired professional dancer having done stints with Tina Turner, Janet Jackson, Prince, Earth, Wind & Fire and other numerous top artists.   A bone stress fracture and a torn meniscus ended her dance career prematurely and Cynthia went on to teach pilates which she has been doing for the past 6 years.

Cynthia has always been drawn to fitness and actually started lifting at Golds Venice at 16 years of age.  Realizing that now was the time to take her life goals to another level, she had another accomplished TRAIN trainer and professional fitness model, Mandy Blank, guide her to competition caliber.

Cynthia lifted twice a week with Mandy but also diligently worked out on her own the other days of the week.  She pretty much became a very familiar site here at TRAIN and worked doggedly every day combining this work ethic with a strict diet consisting of clean meats, lots of veggies and tons of water.  Her toned, feminine, all-natural body is indeed inspiring!  And Derek is loving it!!!!

All this hard work resulted in Cynthia's placing in the Top 5 of the NPC Orange County Classic last April 28th, 2007.  Her placing 4th on her 1st time out is an amazing triumph and everyone at TRAIN heartily and proudly congratulates Cynthia!!!

Cynthia says, "I loved the whole process.  It certainly shows you what character you have.  The only thing I would change is having more time to train."  Cynthia is so revved up by her experience that she will compete once more in about 18 weeks and is aiming to go pro!

Cynthia thanks everyone for being so supportive and having TRAIN so accessible from her work that she couldn't help but workout!

Way to go, Cynthia!!!

The Big Ride

mel gettlemanTRAIN Spinners:  Mel Gettleman, Naomi Meneses, Ali Rahimi, Gordon Duvall and Georgeann Nicol among many others will be riding the giant 545-mile ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles from June 3rd to June 9th.

68-year old Mel prepares for his annual ride.

Ali Rahimi shares with you his inspiration for his decision:  his friend and trainer, Doug Blasdell.  "From the day I met Doug, he was determined that I could make this ride.  It was this gift of optimism that lead him to train people of all ages to participate alongside him.  I promised Doug I would do it, never really believing I could, but only on one condition - that he trained me.  When Doug died, I thought that hope had died with him.  But Doug's longtime friends stepped in and took charge.  By training me, they said, they are continuing his spirit.  Quite frankly, without these remarkable people, I would not be doing this.  I would simply write a check in Doug's memory and never dare attempt such a feat of endurance.  But the determination of my "coaches" is infectious and my ride is, therefore, in large part, a tribute to their friendship and solidarity."

One of those coaches, Geo Nicol, says, "I told him that he could not quit and that I would train him in Doug's place.  In the beginning, Ali resisted.  I insisted.  I bullied.  In other words, I was a biotch on wheels.  Ali caved in.  I was thrilled because I knew he wanted to honor his commitment to Doug, but just didn't think he could do it now that Doug was gone.  I knew he could.  It has been my honor to train this wonderful man.  I have made him ride up huge hills.  In Lycra.  He did not whine about the hills.  Ali rode 80 miles with me last Sunday.  It was his longest ride on a bike EVER.  No whining.  Not a peep.  He has amazed and inspired me."

There are so many rousing stories out there.  TRAIN proudly supports all the AIDS Riders by providing donations and offering 10% off all SPIN class and series purchases.  For your own donation to this worthwhile cause, please go to:  www.aidslifecycle.org and click on "Make a Donation."

Doug's Ashes

doug's ashesSeveral of Doug Blasdell's close friends spread Doug Blasdell's ashes on Sunday, April 22nd at the same location his parents, Grandma Norma and his sister Sandy were spread.  Rose petals were sprinkled in the stream with his ashes.  This location (north/east of Mammoth) is where Doug and his family use to camp growing up.  It was one of his favorite places to go back and visit.

Thank you to all of you who have supported Doug's Outreach Program.  Since we last wrote about this, Don Scott reports that friends and contacts raised $3425 and an open-handed friend kicked in a whopping $5,000!

fernando serrano

Best of all, our favorite returning son, Fernando Serrano, will be back manning the Front Desk!!!  Welcome back, Fernando!  We missed you.

SPIN Update

Starting June 2007, we will resume having early morning classes to be taught by another returning son, Michael Koth!  Take his classes at 7am every Tuesday and Thursday.

Jeff Daly will also be assuming the 9am Tuesday and Thursday slots.

Adam Malis no longer runs our SPIN Program.  We thank him for his past efforts.  Going forward, marketing efforts will be given a big push by Kristin Minter.

Studio SOMA Update

The recent sale of the property has changed our arrangements with Studio SOMA. While the main gym and the SPIN studio remain for as long as w
e occupy the premises, we will no longer have jurisdiction over the back studio and, thus, space to accommodate Mike and Tracy's Ballet Workout and SQueeZE classes respectively.

We will continue to offer these classes until June 30th to give those of you who take these classes enough heads-up time to use up your series.

Following are the steps we need to do to prepare for this transition:

1. Effective immediately, we will no longer accept series renewals for Ballet Workout and SQueeZE classes.

1. Those with series packages have the following options:

1. Use up the classes left in your series packages by June 30th.

2. If you use up their classes before June 30th and would like to continue taking classes, you can pay for individual sessions at the Front Desk.

3. if after June 30th, you still have classes remaining in your series packages, you can:

i. Use them for our SPIN classes.

ii. Transfer your series to friends or family.

iii. We will NOT be providing any refunds for any remaining classes on series packages.

We appreciate having Mike and Tracy as part of our roster of instructors and contributing vastly to TRAIN. We also want to thank all of you who regularly took Ballet Workout and SQueeZE classes and wish you lasting health and fitness.

We look forward to continuing to see your friendly and familiar faces here at the gym investigating other exercise options such as SPIN, strength and cardio training.

As far as the main gym and SPIN studio are concerned, we will continue to remain indefinitely where we are until we find a new home. We are currently close to securing a new location within a few blocks of our West Hollywood site but nothing definitive to announce as yet.

If you or anyone you know is aware of a potential space to accommodate the gym, please contact Barry at:
310-309-0025 or email: barrydane@sbcglobal.net.

So, the 'secret' is no secret after all.  The age old truism "you get what you give" lives on.  Whether it's Cynthia reaching new heights with body building competition, 68-year old Mel inspiring us all that nothing is impossible and Marco and Angel renewing the cycle of life with baby Phoenix, the world is abundant out there and there are no limits unless we impose it ourselves.

Sincerely,

Mylene Dane
