Client
Corner
Karen Rouse
A
recognizable face at the gym is Karen
Rouse, 51, a 2nd generation local
Angeleno. She was
referred to trainer, Ronn Burns,
by her Beverly Hills pedicurist, Donna
Stellini, also a TRAINster, in fact, one of
Ronn's many clients. Karen
was always an avid exerciser working out 1.5 hours
everyday for the past 20 years either biking or
watching Denise Austin videos.
She had never had a trainer before and
is now hooked. For
the past year or so, she strength trains with
Ronn as often as five times per week with one
or two of those days dedicated to boxing.
Karen,
despite her past, slavish devotion to working
out on her own, notes that there is a huge distinction
working with a trainer. She
is more confident walking into any gym and knowing
how to work with weights.
What she loves especially training with
Ronn is the variety of drills he brings to her
regimen and his ability to sculpt her physique.
She gleefully tells me that her body really
shows a difference, especially with her arms.
(Ladies, are you listening?!)
She eagerly anticipates a future focus
area: the butt! Ronn's
continued enthusiasm and close attention will
surely give J Lo a run for her money!
Karen
continues to supplement her training regimen with
her usual affinity for the outdoors.
In addition to swimming, she has taken
up tennis lessons at Beverly Hills Tennis.
She keeps herself busy with these activities
for the sheer enjoyment of it.
In
terms of diet, Karen is a pretty clean eater with
bagels and crackers being her biggest indulgences.
She loves to cook and bake for other people
and, judging by her tiny frame, she herself doesn't
eat the lasagna and lemon puddings she periodically
brings to the gym! Evil!
When
not exercising, Karen loves going to the movies,
hearing easy-listening music, driving up the coast,
watching plays and being with supportive friends
and family.
Karen
remarks that TRAIN is a great, convenient gym
that feels like a close-knit family (without the
baggage!). She likes
the flexibility of the gym and our eagerness to
make clients happy. Thank
you, Karen!

SPIN
Cycle
Adieu to Kirk!
It
was a bittersweet mixture of sadness, appreciation
and well-wishes that we said goodbye (for now!)
to one of our most popular SPIN instructors, Kirk
Allen. We were very
fortunate to have Kirk migrate from a competing
gym to TRAIN about 3 years ago.
Since that day, Kirk diligently taught his
class thrice weekly to his devout students.
Using an uptempo blend of the latest dance
mixes, his loyalists loved the challenging runs
that would never seem to end!
We'll miss you, Kirk!!!
Don't be a stranger.
We'll never tire seeing your gorgeous face
and bod!
Meanwhile,
Steve Stamstad has taken over his
Saturday 10am class and Michael Koth
his Tuesday and Thursday 7am classes.
Happy
Birthday, Mimi!

Another TRAIN veteran of, not just our
SPIN program, but of actually Spinning itself, is
Mimi Ziffren Adams.
She just celebrated another magnificent birthday
yesterday. She is true
classic, an ageless symbol of the fit, strong woman
of the new millennium. Check
her classes out every Monday, Wednesday, Friday
and Saturdays at 9am.

Trainer
Tidbits
Antony
Galvan
is not just a poser in his busy, skin-tight cycling
bibs, he recently achieved winning the CA State
Championship Criterium and the Manhattan Beach
Grand Prix. Learn more
about Antony's achievements and fitness philosophy
at www.galvanizedbodies.com.
Here he shows his game face with his protégés,
Howard "Quadzilla" Lewin and Lauren
"Turbo Chicken" Jacobsen.
Need
an adrenaline boost? Run
to the newsstands and buy the August Men's
Journal! See
star trainer, Gary Allegretto, on
page 126, muse on one of his out-of-the-gym passions,
motorcycling! Not only
is he an avid outdoorsman (not even a 100-miles
of dusty road can mar that handsome face!) he is
also an award-winning, internationally acclaimed
blues musician. On top
of that mountain of achievement, he is also an EMT,
California Firefighter AND an awesome trainer! I
believe Renaissance Man are words
that come to mind. Hmmmm.
Lindsay
loves you! Here's a
smashing testimonial from a TRAINster, Lindsay
Jones about top trainer, Mike Cornell.
"Is
Mike Cornell still there and if so, is he still
teaching ballet classes? Or any classes? Personal
trainer? I'll come back if he is still there for
two reasons: 1) Not only is he fabulous at what
he does, 2) he also KNOWS HOW TO TEACH IT. Most
are not very conscientious when it comes to communicating
the mind/body experience to the layperson. This
is one of the reasons Mike is such a rare breed.
You are fortunate to have him."
Way
to go, Mike! |
Diet
Digest
Eating smart and staying sexy
One
of the best times of the year, summers are abundant
with a vast array of fruits and vegetables.
Add to that our beautiful California days
and you've got a BBQ just waiting to start cooking.
How do we stay on top of our fitness regimen
with all the temptations that are virtually screaming
our names?!
One
thing I've personally learned recently is portion
control and making wiser choices.
Not always easy but the results can be very
gratifying.
Here's
something to think about. Following
are some popular BBQ party food and their calories:
Cheeseburger 590 Calories
Beef Ribs (6-9) 584 Calories
Beef Hot Dog w/ Bun 260 Calories
Chili Dog w/ Bun 303 Calories
Chicken Wings (6) 441 Calories
Chicken Nuggets (8) 433 Calories
Chips (1oz) 150 Calories
Dips (1 Tbsp) 100 Calories
Corn w/ butter (1 Tbsp) 223
Calories
Fries (6.9oz) 610 Calories
Soda (20oz) 250 Calories
Cookie (3 1/2") 275 Calories
A
cheeseburger and fries can just blow everything
up (especially your waistline!)
It takes so much work to burn off those bad
calories, that we really must think twice before
we indulge.
How
to burn off those extra calories:
Walking 80 minutes = ~400 calories burned
Weight Training 1 hr 30 min. = ~260 calories burned
Car washing 1 hr 15 min = ~220 calories Burned
Healthier
Food Choices:
BBQ Chicken (4oz) 257 Calories
Shrimp (9 large) 120 Calories
LF Turkey Dog w/ Bun 211 Calories
Corn w/o butter 122 Calories
Losing
weight is not just a one-shot deal.
It is a lifestyle change.

Exercise
Focus
I'm
sure we all do the surreptitious (and sometimes
not so!) checking out of other trainers
and what they're doing with their clients.
Ever spot Arthur Pia
with his TRX Suspension
Trainer?
Ever
the innovator, Arthur takes his clients
through unimaginable drills designed for
top athletes and soldiers.
Any exercise that can be done on
a machine can be done with these cables.
Since you are holding on to the handles
as the various exercise permutations are
performed, your forearms build, the back
aligns and the abs are tight.
The core is developed and strengthened.
Any two-legged drill can also be done on
one leg thus furthering the development
of the entire body structure.
Plyometrics are also easier especially
for those that are uncomfortable doing it
on their own as there is something to hang
on to. It
is quite the versatile and portable tool.
The
cables were invented by a Navy Seal, ok?
Nuff said. Talk
to Arthur about it.
Try it out.
You'll be crying for mama.
Arthur has worked with Kelly
Rowan from The O.C., Mariska
Hargitay from Law & Order
SVU and many other very hard-workers
in and out of the gym. Arthur Pia
can be contacted by calling TRAIN.
