Greetings!
Here we go again with our annual
sighs of disbelief when we see the holiday décor
immediately up right after we just swabbed off
the last bit of smeared Britney mascara that completed
our Halloween outfit. Or did I actually
see Santas BEFORE
the witches??? Yes, the year is certainly flying
and we now officially have 364 days left until
our Presidential Election.
With the holiday season upon us, it is very tempting
to let our carefully managed schedules go pear-shaped.
But, please, whatever you do, do not let your
fitness regimen go by the wayside.
Staying active and healthy will give you the stamina
and extra energy to survive the next few months.
You just gotta make time for it! Like a
wise old man said:
" Time is a created
thing. To say 'I don't have time,' is like saying,
'I don't want to."
Lao-Tzu
Enjoy! |

DIET
DIGEST: from one of our partners, Fresh Dining:
Fall
Tips for Healthy Living
As the days get shorter and the temperatures drop,
change is in the air. That's what makes
fall a great time for renewal and fresh starts.
It's time to fine-tune your health by making one
or two small changes that yield big results.
ˇ Let
Beans Be a Part of Your Diet
If you do one thing to improve your diet
this fall, eat 3 cups of beans each week. Besides
being a comfort food, beans add flavor and texture
to soups, chili, and casseroles. They're also
a great salad topper.
ˇ
Defuse Stress With Friendship
Fall is a good time to come back together after
the summer scattering of vacations and busy schedules
-- a great time to relax with friends.
ˇ Be
Tender With Your Teeth
Ice is a crystal and tooth enamel is a crystal
- when the two meet, one of them has to give.
Sometimes it's the tooth. Popcorn kernels can
break teeth or fillings too, and the hull, if
lodged in gum tissue, can irritate and cause
bacteria buildup.
ˇ Have
Fun With Fitness
Break out of your fitness rut by taking a ballroom
dance class or a mind-body workout such as yoga,
Pilates, or Tai chi. You'll be energized and more
likely to stick with it.
ˇ Warm
Up With Wine
Diversify your alcohol choice with a room temperature
glass of table wine. The warmer drink will take
the chill off and the wine, especially red, has
heart health benefits. Remember a standard
size glass of wine is just 4 ounces. Pregnant
women and others with health reasons who should
not to drink should abstain.
To all of the
Fresh Dining Community,
Southern California
Fire-Storm victims need many things in
many places, and Fresh Dining is going to be part
of the solution.
First, Fresh Dining has selected two areas that
were hardest hit and offered "sponsorship" to
100 displaced people - a full week of Fresh Dining
for free.
Secondly, with your help, we will extend our fire
relief effort through charitable donations in
two ways:
Make your donation directly to San
Diego Poway Unified School District.
The Poway Unified School District was one of the
hardest hit with 22 teachers and over 300 school
children losing their homes. If you wish to donate
funds directly, please go to the School Districts'
website (www.powayusd.com),
click on the "Donations" link, and follow the
instructions to make your donation.
Purchasing a Fire-Relief "Gift Card" for an individual
or charities
Fresh Dining is making modified deliveries available
via Gift Cards at $135 per person, per week. Besides
the 100 fire-victims Fresh Dining is sponsoring,
Fresh Dining will deliver food to victims in all
other areas via the gift card. Your donation will
pay for the food and Fresh Dining will supply
the labor and delivery costs for all charitable
gift cards. You will receive a receipt of first
delivery via e-mail as proof that the recipient
has received your gift. Your sponsorship can be
either named or anonymous as per your preference.

TRAIN
FOR THE CURE: round up
Last October 27th, we held our
spin studio open for an annual fund-raiser, TRAIN
for the Cure, benefiting the Saul
and Joyce Brandman Breast Center at Cedars-Sinai.
Here are some heart-warming end results:
"Thanks to all of you who made Train for the Cure
2007 a huge success! As of today we raised
over $3,000.00 in one hour! Wendy
Segall was our largest donor (she raised
over $600 herself by getting sponsors and making
her own donation). Donations are still coming
in so I expect that we will hit $4,000 by the
end of the week. Thanks to Kathy
for being the motivator and getting so many people
to come; thanks to Andre
and Mimi
for teaching a great class; thanks to Mylene
for donating the space and the time slots
for two classes; and thanks to Pam
for being my right-hand-gal on Saturday morning.
Here looking forward to an even better 2008!"
All my best,
Jessica Dabney
"A gracious thank you, Mylene.
Your generous contribution to the annual "Spin
for the Cure" is greatly appreciated. With
events like "Spin" we can make a difference in
the search for a cure for breast cancer."
Very sincerely,
Pam Rubin
"I personally want to thank all of you great ladies
and donors, I am so very proud of you ladies and
what you do for the Breast Center.
Want you to know while you were spinning I was
spending some of your money, giving free Mammograms
that day to 35 women that had no insurance to
take care of such an important thing like a Mammogram.
It went so well we are going to do it again in
the spring.
I never forget that because your hard work we
are be able to do program's like we do.
Thanks from the bottom of my heart, to all of
you"
Warm Regards
Joyce
TRAIN is committed to supporting this worthwhile
cause and will continue to open our SPIN studio
for future opportunities with the Saul and Joyce
Brandman Breast Center.

A WOMAN'S WEEK AT THE GYM
For my birthday this year, my daughter (the dear)
purchased a week ofpersonal training at the local
health club for me. Although I am still
in great shape since being a high school football
cheerleader 43 years ago, I decided it would be
a good idea to go ahead and give it a try.
I called the club and made my reservations with
a personal trainer named Belinda, who identified
herself as a 26-year-old aerobics instructor and
model for athletic clothing and swim wear.
My daughter seemed pleased with my enthusiasm
to get started! The club encouraged me to keep
a diary to chart my progress.
MONDAY:
Started my day at 6:00 a.m. Tough to get out of
bed, but found it was wellworth it when I arrived
at the health club to find Belinda waiting for
me.She is something of a Greek goddess - with
blonde hair, dancing eyes and a dazzling white
smile. Woo Hoo!! Belinda gave me a tour and showed
me the machines. I enjoyed watching the skillful
way in which she conducted her aerobics class
after my workout today. Very inspiring!
Belinda was encouraging as I did my sit-ups, although
my gut was already aching from holding it in the
whole time she was around. This is going to be
a FANTASTIC week-!!
TUESDAY:
I drank a whole pot of coffee, but I finally made
it out the door. Belinda made me lie on
my back and push a heavy iron bar into the air
then she put weights on it! My legs were a little
wobbly on the treadmill, but I made the full mile.
Belinda's rewarding smile made it all worthwhile.
I feel GREAT-!! It's a whole new life for me.
WEDNESDAY:
The only way I can brush my teeth is by laying
the toothbrush on the counter and moving my mouth
back and forth over it. I believe I have a hernia
in both pectorals. Driving was OK as long as I
didn't try to steer or stop. parked on top of
a GEO in the club parking lot. Belinda was
impatient with me, insisting that my screams bothered
other club members. Her voice is a little too
perky for early in the morning and when she scolds,
she gets this nasally whine that is VERY annoying.
My chest hurt when I got on the treadmill, so
Belinda put me on the stair monster. Why the Hell
would anyone invent a machine to simulate an activity
rendered obsolete by elevators? Belinda told me
it would help me get in shape and enjoy life.
She said some other shit too.
THURSDAY:
Belinda was waiting for me with her vampire-like
teeth exposed as her thin, cruel lips were pulled
back in a full snarl. I couldn't help being a
half an hour late, it took me that long to tie
my shoes. Belinda took me to work out with dumbbells.
When she was not looking, I ran and hid in the
restroom. She sent another skinny bitch to find
me then, as punishment, she put me on the rowing
machine -- which I sank.
FRIDAY:
I hate that bitch Belinda more than any human
being has ever hated any other human being in
the history of the world. Stupid, skinny, anemic,
anorexic little cheerleader. If there was a part
of my body I could move without unbearable pain,
I would beat her with it. Belinda wanted
me to work on my triceps. I don't have any triceps!
And if you don't want dents in the floor, don't
hand me the damned barbells or anything that weighs
more than a sandwich. The treadmill flung me off
and I landed on a health and nutrition teacher.
Why couldn't it have been someone softer, like
the drama coach or the choir director?
SATURDAY:
Belinda left a message on my answering machine
in her grating, shrilly voice wondering why I
did not show up today. Just hearing her made me
want to smash the machine with my planner. However,
I lacked the strength to even use the TV remote
and ended up catching eleven straight hours of
the Weather Channel.
SUNDAY:
I'm having the Church van pick me up for services
today so I can go and thank GOD that this week
is over. I will also pray that next year my daughter
(the little shit) will choose a gift for me that
is fun -- like a root canal or a hysterectomy.
I still say if God had wanted me to bend over,
he would have sprinkled the floor with diamonds!!!
